100 BEST PROJECTS
The contest
has been organised on an annual basis since 2004. It is open for secondary
comprehensive schools, gymnasiums, advanced schools, cadet corps and girls’
schools, boarding schools, orphanages, special education schools, as well as
extended education centres with study groups.
The contest is held among schoolchildren of the Krasnoyarsk
region, Republic of Khakassia, Irkutsk and Kemerovo regions, and Boxitogorsk
district of the Leningrad region; starting from 2007 kids from the Kandalaksha
district of the Murmansk region, Ekaterinburg city, Kamensk-Uralsk,
Krasnoturyinsk and Severouralsk provinces, Nizhneserginsk district of the
Sverdlov region, Segezh district of Karelia, and Nikolaev city (Ukraine) are
also admitted to participate.
100 award-winning groups among the four last school years and 25 winners among
lower school teams are short listed as a result of each contest, with RUR
100,000 and RUR 20,000 of financing granted to each of them respectively. Over
the four years of its existence, the contest received applications for 2,122
kids’ projects, 450 of which became winners and 183 were awarded with
encouragement prizes. The 2004-2007 grant fund of the programme was over RUR 40
mln.
The peculiarity of this contest is that kids draw up their projects during one
academic year and implement them in the next academic year.
The grant fund of the fifth contest ‘100 Best Projects’, which
will be held in the 2007-2008 academic year, has been increased to RUR 17 mln.
The number of winners will also change – apart from the usual 100 winners among
the last four years of school, 100 projects devised by lower school groups will
be selected that will each be granted RUR 20,000. Moreover, 25 winners in the
category ‘Promotion’ will be awarded grants amounting to RUR 200,000
each.
Contest categories for the four last years of school:
• Kids’ first aid (help for people requiring medical assistance)
• Territory of creativity (organisation of creative activities)
• KLASSNET.RU (acquisition of additional knowledge in the IT sphere,
creation of educational computer games and permanent Internet sites)
• Our view (establishment and development of children’s Mass Media) New!
• Promotion (promotion of activities carried out by the project teams
earlier) New!
Categories for the lower school:
• I HAVE AN IDEA! (deadline for implementation of the project: September –
December)
A unique feature of the contest is the procedure for processing
applications that includes – apart from the usual Experts’ Council consisting
of adults – Kids’ Committees, where all members are schoolchildren (kids’
committees). Such an approach enables the organisers to combine an adult
perspective on the kids’ projects with the children’s standpoint concerning
projects devised by their peers.

In September 2006, RUSAL issued a
colourful edition – Book of the best records -
celebrating the most fascinating winning projects over the years. The book
describes the acts of kindness made by schoolchildren living in the vast
territory spanning from the Irkutsk region to the Republic of Khakasia.
