100 SPORT PROJECTS

UC RUSAL’s ‘100 Sport Projects’ aims to develop sports for children in the regions of UC RUSAL's presence. Annual grant contests to implement sports projects are held twice every year - in winter and summer. Under the terms of the contest funds are allocated both for the organisation of sports events and the maintenance of sports facilities.

The grant contests were introduced as a result of the Company’s long-term commitment to sports projects. The first large-scale sports project of RUSAL was the construction of the Fitness Centre in Sayanogorsk in the Republic of Khakassia. The total cost of the project amounted to 2 million US dollars. Between 2003 and 2005 the Company has been implementing a project to construct sports grounds and mini-stadiums in the cities of RUSAL’s presence. Overall, 7 new sports grounds have been built and 11 have been renovated in Achinsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novokuznetsk and Sayanogorsk. In 2006 RUSAL expanded the ‘100 sports projects’ programme both in terms of its geography and in terms of the opportunities offered to the organisations eligible for participation in the contest. 120 organisations have already received grants under the ‘100 Sport Projects’ programme. Only last year 35,000 people visited sports grounds, were engaged in 98 sports clubs and participated in 415 events.

The ‘100 sports projects’ programme is designed not only to improve health and organise exciting sports events. One of its objectives is to help children start social and community projects. Almost every project is supported by a team of children who help adults to clean the sports grounds and organise different activities aimed to promote a healthy life-style.
