BRATSK ALUMINIUM SMELTER

Bratsk aluminium smelter is the largest producer of primary aluminium in the world. The smelter accounts for 30% of aluminium production in Russia and 4% of the world’s output.

In 2007, it produced 995,000 tonnes of primary aluminium.

The smelter employs around 5,000 people. It consumes approx. 75% of the energy generated by the nearby Bratsk HPP.

 Geography

Founded in 1955, Bratsk is a city in the Irkutsk region of Russia. It is located in the central part of the Angara mountain range on the banks of the Bratsk reservoir, 490 km north of Irkutsk. The city serves as a port, and has a railway station and airport. The population of this district centre is 277,100 people. Its main industries include hydroenergetics, forestry and wood working.

Technology

The smelter utilises Soderberg technology. In 2001, Bratsk Aluminium Smelter completed an intermediate transition to ‘semi-dry’ anode technology. In 2005, conversion of all 25 potrooms began to the more environmentally friendly ‘dry’ anode technology.

Certificates

The Bratsk smelter was certified under the ISO 9001 quality management standard and the ISO 14001 environmental management standard. In 2007, the health and safety management system of the smelter was certified to international standard OHSAS 18001.

Development

The Bratsk Aluminium Smelter put into operation a modern casting system in Casthouse 3 in 2007 after two years of construction. The annual capacity of the new casting system is now 100,000 tonnes of slabs.

The anode paste plant at the smelter has been equipped with new spillage-free conveyors, which feed anode paste to the finished product warehouse, with practically no wastage.

The smelter has also commissioned an automated pitch storage system for Tank 4. All tanks already have an autonomous pitch fume condensation system, which substantially reduces the environmental impact of the facility.

In May 2007, the smelter’s industrial sanitary laboratory, which supplies accurate data on the environmental conditions at the production site, was accredited by the federal regulatory authorities. As a result the smelter’s laboratory is entitled to provide services to third parties. The laboratory also received federal accreditation in radiation control.

In 2007, the Bratsk Aluminium Smelter continued to implement its production system aimed at improving performance, labour productivity and product quality. To apply the world’s best practices in production systems, the smelter’s personnel work in partnership with specialists from Elkem Aluminium Lista (Norway).

Environment

In 2007, the smelter started preparing for the environmental modernisation of its production processes. The modernisation project involves the installation of modern dry gas scrubbers and automatic alumina point feeders at all of the 25 potrooms. UC RUSAL is investing over USD350 million in the first stage of the modernisation programme. When all the committed projects are completed, gross emissions will be cut by 30%, and core pollutants are expected to be down by between 40% and 60%.

In December 2007, an environmental information centre was opened at the smelter, which allows anyone to obtain accurate information about environmental projects run at the smelter and ask the smelter’s specialists any questions.
