Technology
The Bayer process is used to refine alumina from bauxites which arrive from
Australia on cargo ships at the Eurallumina loading berth in Portovesme.
They are then conveyed to the storage area of the refinery.
The refinery also produces aluminium hydrate which is supplied to both domestic
and foreign markets.

Development
In 2007, the company plans to construct three reservoirs in the industrial
zone. These reservoirs hold an overall volume of 20 mln cubic metres
which will solve the problem of residue storage until 2010.
Certificates
The refinery was certified under the ISO 14001 and OHASAS 18001 international
environmental standards.
Environment
According to the environmental plan, disinfection and improvement measures have
been taken to clean the aquifer. This includes the restoration of the damaged
surface and the boring of several water wells to drain water to be used in the
production process. After the environmental plan came into force to disinfect
and improve Sulcis-Iglesiente, Eurallumina purchased Sumitomo devices which
brought SO2 and dust emissions into line with legislation and improved the
environment on the entire industrial area of Portoscuso.
