KANDALAKSHA ALUMINIUM SMELTER

The Kandalaksha Aluminium Smelter, commissioned in 1951, is the northernmost aluminium smelter in Russia.

Its main products are primary aluminium ingots, aluminium wire rod and billets.

In 2007, it produced 75,650 tonnes of aluminium. Energy for the smelter is supplied by Kolskaya Nuclear Power Plant and the NIVA-3 hydropower plant. The smelter employs about 1,300 people.

 Geography

Kandalaksha is a town in the Murmansk Region of Russia, located on the Kola Peninsula on the coast of the Kandalaksha Gulf on the White Sea, 277 km south of Murmansk. The town is a White Sea port and has a developed transport infrastructure. Its railway station connects to the railway route stretching from Murmansk to Saint Petersburg. Kandalaksha has existed since the 11th century and currently has a population of 58,600 people. The town's key industrial facilities include an aluminium smelter, an experimental mechanical plant, six hydropower stations united into a single cascade, a bakery plant and a distillery. The suburbs of the town host logging camps and woodworking plants.

Technology

The smelter is equipped with BT-85 Horizontal Stud Soederberg pots, a rolling mill for production of wire rod, stationary electric mixers and aluminium ingot casting machines. The technology is being upgraded with a view to improving the smelter’s technical and economic indicators. A new programme has been launched, with the aim of reconstructing the existing reduction potrooms and transitioning to pre-bake technology.

Certificates

In 2003 the quality management system of the Kandalaksha smelter was introduced and certified, with a subsequent recertification in 2006.

The environmental management system was introduced and certified in 2006. During its introduction it was integrated with the existing quality management system to the maximum possible extent.

Development

In 2005 the construction of a dry gas scrubber designed by VAMI for HSS pots was fully completed at the smelter. The gas scrubber, whose efficiency reaches 96-99%, enabled the facility to achieve a tenfold reduction of emissions generated by the reduction area, with its excellent performance further confirmed within a lasting period of exploitation.
