(SWEDEN)
KUBAL (SWEDEN)
Kubal is one of the
largest industrial facilities in Central Sweden and the only primary aluminium
producer in the country.
In 1942, an aluminium smelter was built in Sundsvall. Aluminium production
capacities were expanded intensively and in the 1960s a new aluminium
production facility was constructed.
In the middle of the 1980s, the smelter was modernised using the latest
technologies of that time, increasing production capacity from 2,000 to 100,000
tonnes per annum, which satisfies half of all aluminium demand in Sweden.
Approximately 50% of aluminium produced at Kubal is supplied to customers in
Sweden, and the remaining 50% goes to European customers. The workforce of the
smelter is over 500 people.

Technology
Kubal uses two technologies to produce aluminium. 78,600 tonnes of liquid
aluminium is produced annually by Soderberg technology and 23,500 tonnes is
produced by technology which uses pre-baked anodes. Soederberg electrolytic
cells operate using dry anode paste. The computer control system has been
implemented.
