NIKOLAEV ALUMINA REFINERY

When commissioned in July 1980, the Nikolaev alumina refinery was meant to produce 1 million tonnes of alumina annually. Today, the refinery has expanded its production capacity to over 1.4 million tonnes.

 Geography

Located on the Black Sea coast in Ukraine, at the confluence of the Southern Bug and Ingul rivers, Nikolaev is the major city in the Nikolaev region, Ukraine. Nikolaev has a sea and river port, as well as a railway station junction. In 1991, it had a population of 512,000 people. Industry is largely represented by mechanical engineering (including ship building), light and food industries, in addition to the Nikolaev alumina refinery.
The country of Ukraine, in South Eastern Europe, borders the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. Ukraine covers an area of 603,700 sq km, and has a population of 48.9 million people.

Technology

The Nikolaev refinery applies the Bayer process technolgy to refine alumina from bauxites.

Certificates

In 2002, the refinery’s quality management system was ISO 9001 2000 certified. In 2004, the refinery was certified to the environmental management standard ISO 14001.

In January 2008, the Nikolaev Alumina Refinery was granted a certificate confirming the compliance of its health and safety management system with the requirements laid down in the international standard OHSAS 18001. The certificate was issued by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), a certification association from Norway. The certificate is the third confirmation of the refinery’s compliance with international standards, following on from the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates, and represents the final step on the way towards the formation of an integrated management system at the refinery.

Development

The refinery's ongoing project aimed at boosting its annual capacity to 1.7 mln tonnes of alumina, currently rates as one of the most significant investment projects in the region. Activities targeting expansion of production, upgrade of equipment and improvement of the refinery's KPIs are fully underway. For example, the grinding area is being expanded, pre-desilication tanks have been introduced to the grinding area, a deep thickening area has been commissioned and precipitation line No.5 is being constructed. Red mud disposal area No.2 was brought on line in 2007.

Environment

In June 2007, DNV carried out a recertification audit of the refinery’s environmental management system to confirm its compliance with the international standard ISO 14001:2004. As a result of the audit, the refinery received a confirmation of its compliance with established standard environmental management systems.

The refinery completed the construction of mud disposal area 2 and started to design a project to reclaim the basin of mud disposal area 1. The building of local treatment plants, replacing dust collection facilities and the instillation of acoustic horns on the electrostatic precipitators of its calciners has also begun.

All equipment that produces particulate pollutants are equipped with dust filters. The refinery successfully operates a loop water circulation system, which completely solves the problem of waste water discharge into the water supply.

In 2007, the Nikolaev Alumina Refinery was the winner in the 6th Ukrainian ‘Living planet’ awards under the ‘Environmental Quality and Safety’ section in the ‘Environmental Quality and Shop-floor Safety’ category. These awards are organised by a Ukrainian non-profit organisation under the auspices of the Environmental Protection Ministry and Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce. The award was an acknowledgement of the positive results achieved by the refinery in recent years through its efforts to improve its environmental management system.
