Fully commissioned in 1967
and currently employing 1,128 people, Queensland Alumina, Ltd is located in
Gladstone in the State of Queensland. The refinery has a capacity of 3.9
million tonnes of alumina per year.

It is located in the Southern hemisphere and its territories are spread across
the Australian mainland, the island of Tasmania and other adjacent islands. Its
capital city is Canberra. The Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is
also the head of the Commonwealth. The mining industry is one of the oldest in
the country. Coal mining in particular makes Australia one of the world’s top
ten coal producers. The country is also a large producer of uranium and gas,
and is one of the leaders in the extraction and exportation of bauxite and the
production of alumina.

Currently the plant is run by a consortium of the world’s two top aluminium
producers: United Company RUSAL’s share is 20%, and Rio Tinto Alcan owns the
remaining 80%. The board of Queensland Alumina, Ltd is made up of Directors
nominated by the owner companies.
Technology
QAL is equipped with Bayer process technology which is used to produce alumina
from bauxites.
Bauxite is sourced from the Rio Tinto Alcan mines at Weipa in north Queensland,
and shipped to QAL in a fleet of 4 dedicated bulk carriers.
Environment
Queensland Alumina, Ltd has passed certification and has been awarded the ISO
14001 Compliance Certificate (international environmental management
standards).
