ROUND TABLE "THE ROLE OF BUSINESS SOCIETY IN PREVENTION OF CLIMATE CHANGE"

October 29 in Krasnoyarsk a round table titled “The Role of Business Society in Prevention of Climate Change” took place with the participation of Marco Borsotti, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative.

The event supported by UC RUSAL and ‘Komsomolskaya Pravda’ newspaper provided platform for a discussion between representatives from authorities, business, environment protection organisations and mass media. The same day Mr Borsotti and Alexander Livshits, Director for International and Special Projects, signed a Memorandum of Understanding acknowledging collaboration in environment protection and sustainable development.

Nowadays the global society pays close attention to the threat of climate change and gives special importance to environment protection projects. Holding conferences and seminars is a crucial step in building a common strategy on how to fight climate change. Participants of the round table in Krasnoyarsk shared best practices in environment protection, analysed the environment programmes open in Krasnoyarsk region and discussed effective ways for international, state and public organisations and businesses to collaborate in driving to a common environmental policy.

Environment safety at production sites is a strategic priority for UC RUSAL. To meet goals in this area the company annually allocates hundreds of millions of dollars: in 2007-2013 the company will spend over USD1.4 mln on environment protection. By 2015 it will help to eliminate 1/3 of pollutant emissions. UC RUSAL was the first company in Russia to join the UNDP in May 2007 and participate in research and implementation of international projects aimed at reducing the risks of global climate change and establishing sustainable development.
