HEALTH AND SAFETY

One of the most important challenges facing RUSAL today is to reduce the number of industrial injuries.

The company has a systematic approach to safety, and employs all available resources to address this challenge. We believe that comprehensive work needs to be undertaken in two key areas – first, in providing high-standard working conditions, and second, in monitoring the workplace and taking the measures necessary to prevent employees from inappropriate actions. A centralised registry of emergencies, accidents and fires plays an important part here.  It allows changes in the Health and Safety (H&S) management system to be centrally monitored, and for managerial decisions to be taken on the basis of these changes.

On a regular basis at its facilities, RUSAL researches and brings to light any probable causes of emergencies,, in order to eliminate them before they lead to irretrievable consequences.

The company has carefully formulated main H&S principles.  Adherence to these principles will ensure safety and, simultaneously, improve the H&S management structure.  The principles are as follows:

  1. All injuries and accidents can be prevented
Every injury has its root cause, and thus can be prevented by elimination of the root cause.

  2. Employees are the key link
Qualified personnel who are concerned with producing good results and ensuring safety will make it possible to achieve high performance indicators.

  3. Observance of H&S rules is a pre-requisite in RUSAL
Every employee must follow all required safety rules and show initiative when considering these issues.

  4. Employees must have H&S training
It cannot be assumed that an experienced worker knows all the safety requirements and will follow them. There is a need for a systematic and comprehensive approach to safety training and employees’ vocational certification in compliance with the requirements of the country where the company is based.

  5. Safe conduct is as important in everyday life as it is in the work place
Using good safety principles in day-to-day life is a requirement necessary to implement RUSAL’s H&S policy.  Both the company and its employees will benefit if this policy becomes an integral part of the activities of all individuals in the company.

  6. Problems must be solved quickly
If any H&S problems arise, they must be solved immediately.

  7. RUSAL’s prestige depends on good H&S indicators
Industrial injuries undermine the company’s image and affect morale in the workforce. A conscientious attitude towards H&S is a key career growth indicator.

  8. H&S is part of the corporate culture
To design a safe culture of conduct means to closely manage employees.

A safe culture of conduct provides for:

  • setting of clear H&S targets
  • informing employees on the targets and their clarification by the management
  • imperative compliance with all safety requirements and rules by both employees and managers
  • training and vocational certification of all employees
  • an open and confidential atmosphere which helps to highlight and solve problems

Robust health and favourable morale within the workforce will have a positive impact on production rates.  RUSAL’s management is convinced that ensuring health and safety is one of the priority steps in achieving its critical target of becoming the most effective aluminium company in the world.
