SOCIAL REPORT 2004
In 2004
RUSAL has published a Social Report in compliance with UN Global Compact
principles
The Report is part of RUSAL's serious commitment to embedding the principles of
corporate social responsibility across its global operations, which include
production facilities in Russia, the CIS, Guinea and Australia, sales offices
in Guyana, Japan, Germany and the USA, and logistics to support customers in 39
countries worldwide.
RUSAL joined the United Nations Global Compact in March 2002 and was one of the
first Russian companies to do so. The companies' first Social Report is
consistent with the UN Global Compact framework — an international agreement
between the UN and the global business community — and demonstrates RUSAL's
willingness to comply with international standards.
Introducing the report Alexander Bulygin, CEO, RUSAL said «RUSAL has an
ambitious vision of strategic and sustainable growth. Our future continued
success can only be founded upon proactive participation in the economic and
social development of the countries where we operate»
The Report outlines principles and drivers underpinning RUSAL's relations with
its employees, partners, customers, and the communities where operations are
located. These principles are the basis for RUSAL's development strategy.
Over the past five years RUSAL has spent US$173.4 million on environmental
protection programs and invested US$637 million in the modernization of
production facilities in order to improve environmental performance. Eight
RUSAL plants have now had their environmental management systems certified
under the international ISO 14001 standard.
Over the past four years, the injury rate at production facilities has been
reduced by 51 per cent and the number of workdays lost by 40 per cent. In 2004
RUSAL commenced implementation of the international system of management of
occupational safety and health (OHSAS 18001).
RUSAL provides employees with one of the best compensation/benefits packages in
the industry and allocates more than US$4 million annually to create
opportunities for professional growth and career development.
RUSAL actively participates in the economic development of communities where
operations are located. The company delivers a number of social programs aimed
at providing support to socially vulnerable groups and the development of youth
initiatives. RUSAL allocates an annual US$10 million on charity.
