STRATEGY
UC RUSAL’s strategy aims to secure steady and sustainable business development
by maximising the potential of the corporation’s present competitive advantages
and examining and responding to major world trends. Today, diversification and
consolidation are decisive factors determining success in the international
mining and metals industry and UC RUSAL is responding accordingly
UC RUSAL is the world leader in the production of alumina and aluminium and in
order to continue to implement our strategy of growth, we have begun our
development into a diversified international mining and metals corporation.
This development will utilise a powerful scientific and research base, vast
financial resources, a global business scale and the expertise of our employees
to secure a leading position in a number of new areas in the raw materials and
metal production industries. We intend to efficiently employ both our
acquisition strategy and projects that encourage internally-driven growth. The
acquisition in 2008 of 25% plus one share in Norilsk Nickel was the first step
in reaching this goal.
Projects to develop bauxite deposits and modernise alumina and aluminium
production facilities will help to increase output and enhance the quality of
our products. Maximum self-sufficiency in all raw materials will secure stable
production.
A search for new opportunities will broaden the scope and geography of the
business. The development and diversification of our base will guarantee
reliable supplies of electrical power to our facilities and will open the door
to new and promising business areas. In addition to our hydro power projects,
we intend to strengthen our power base through participation in projects that
are focused on alternative energy generation sources such as coal, gas and
nuclear power.
The successful implementation of our strategic plans depends on the strength of
the company’s talent base. The involvement of professional and ambitious
specialists who share the common goals of our team is yet another of our
critical strategic objectives, which is why UC RUSAL will continue to invest
heavily in specialist education initiatives and the highest levels of industry
training.
