SOUTH URALS CRYOLITE PLANT
The cryolite plant in
Kuvandyk, which was to become the second production facility of its kind in
Russia, was initially proposed in 1940. During World War ΙΙ,
construction was put on hold several times and it was only until its completion
in 5 November 1954 that the plant was launched.

Kuvandyk is a town (before 1953 it was
a small village) and a centre of the Kuvandyk region of the Orenburg area in
Russia. It is located on the left bank of the Sakmara river, which is a
tributary of the Ural river. The town’s railway station, on the Orenburg to
Orsk line, is 194 km east of Orenburg. The town’s population is 30,000.

South Urals Cryolite Plant produces fluorides that are supplied to the
aluminium smelters of UC RUSAL, which acquired the plant in 2007.
Development
Production of fluorides at the plant is based on the full process cycle from
receiving raw materials to distribution of the end products. The process cycle
includes production of fluorhydric acid, acid cleaning, preparation of saline
liquors and the slurry of aluminium hydrate, production of fluorides, cleaning
of exhaust fumes, waste neutralisation and disposal, and shipment of finished
products.
Since its launch, new production lines have been launched and new technologies
implemented at the plant for the development of various products like boric
acid, which is applied in ceramic, glass, metal and pharmaceutical industries,
and aluminium sulphate used for water cleaning.
