URALS FOIL

Urals Foil Mill was established in 2003 on the site of the Mikhailovsk non-ferrous metal working plant, located in Mikhailovsk, 130 kilometres south-west of Ekaterinburg.

Staffed with 720 people, the mill produces various types of aluminium foil and tape. In 2007, its output was 16,060 tonnes.

 Geography

Mikhailovsk is a town in the Sverdlovsk region of Russia. It has a population of 10,950 and is just 10 kilometres from the Mikhailovskiy Zavod railway station.
The production facilities include a foil mill, Litmet Plant (production of pig iron and steel cast products), the Ural Elastomeric Sealants Plant and the Mikhailovsk Casting & Rolling Mill.
The Sverdlovsk region has a population of 4,582,400 people, and occupies an area of 194,800 square kilometres. It lies on the eastern slopes of the Middle and North Ural and borders part of the West-Siberian Plain. The administrative centre is Ekaterinburg. The climate is continental, with long cold winters and mild summers.

Technology

Urals Foil covers the complete technology cycle of foil manufacturing, from the melting of aluminium and the casting of aluminium tape through to the final production and cutting of alufoil.

A QUARTO 1800 cold foil rolling mill was launched at the facility in 2001.

A new cutting line was commissioned at Urals Foil in 2004. It was produced by the German company Kampf and is equipped with an ultrasonic exchanger, which allows foil bundles to be enlarged. The launch of the new line improved the quality of the finished products, which includes 9-micron foil.

2007 saw the completion of the 'Sustaining the production process' investment project at Urals Foil. The QUARTO 1800 mill was reconstructed as part of this programme and so were the cast area and the hydraulic systems of the Achenbach mills.

Products

Foil: 0.007 – 0.2 mm thick, 20 – 1,500 mm wide.

Tape: 0.21 – 0.40 mm thick, 40 – 1,500 mm wide.

Foil and tape are produced in line with Russian standards GOST 745-2003, GOST 618-73, GOST 25905 – 83, GOST 13726 – 97, and are also in compliance with European and American standards and individual specifications of clients, out of aluminium of Ŕ5, Ŕ0, ŔD1 grades and aluminium alloys AMTs(3003), 1050, 1100, 8079, 8011, AMG - 2.

Certificates

Product quality complies with the requirements of international standards. Quality control is performed throughout the whole life cycle of the product. Each type of product has gone through a certification process and has obtained certificates of compliance along with the necessary hygiene certificates.

In December 2007, compliance of with the Quality Management System ISO 9001:2000 international standards was confirmed as a result of an audit carried out by TUV NORD. The validity period of the certificate was also increased.

Development

In 2008, the facility started implementing the 'Boosting production capacities’ investment project, which will include:
  • the construction of a melting furnace;
  • the recovery of direct rolling mill ABP 1600;
  • the purchase of the latest foil cutting machine for thicknesses in the 0.005-0.05 mm range;
  • the purchase of 2 foil annealing furnaces
Completion of this project will boost output by 50%.
