VOLKHOV ALUMINIUM SMELTER

The Volkhov Aluminium Smelter first produced industrial aluminium in 1932. The smelter’s main product is primary aluminium.

In 2006, the smelter produced 23,500 tonnes of aluminium, a 2.5% year-on-year increase over 2005.

The energy for the smelter is supplied by the Volkhov Hydropower Plant, which forms part of the Lenenergo system, the largest regional energy supplier in Russia’s northwest.

The smelter employs 514 people.

 Geography

The Volkhov Aluminium Smelter is located in Volkhov, a small town in the St.Petersburg Region of Russia. Its population is 50,000 people. Volkhov has a large railway junction serving as a crossroads to all points of the Russian Railway network, and mooring and cargo handling facilities on the Volkhov River that provide access to the Saint Petersburg and Murmansk sea ports. In addition to the smelter, the town hosts a hydropower plant and chemical and cement enterprises.

Process technology

In September 1999, the smelter completed modernisation of its reduction area. The smelter is equipped with cutting-edge pre-bake pots designed by the Russian National Aluminium & Magnesium Institute, or VAMI.

Development and Environment

The smelter’s key areas for improvement by 2010 are as follows:

  • Construction of dry gas scrubbers for the plant’s electrolysis area, to reduce harmful emissions and to improve the regional environment.
  • Modernisation of the smelter’s Automated Process Control System.
