 Geography

JAMAICA, with a population of 2.6 mln. people is a Caribbean island in the West Indies, covering an area of 11,500 square kilometres. A basic sector of the Jamaican economy includes bauxite mining, production and export of alumina. The capital of Jamaica is Kingston. The official language is English.  The currency is Jamaican dollar. The climate in Jamaica is tropical, with hot and humid weather, although higher inland regions have a more temperate climate.

Technology

In Jamaica most of the bauxite deposits are found very near to the surface of the land, with just a thin soil cover. They range in depth from 1.5 to 46 metres. Bauxite is excavated by surface mining methods, using draglines, backhoes, shovels, front-end loaders and bulldozers. Trucks are used to carry the ore either directly to the plant or to a loading station, where it is subsequently transferred to railway cars, conveyors or aerial ropeways.

Environment

The United Company RUSAL controls the land rented to the bauxite mines of WINDALCO. The company’s policy is to adapt these lands not only to bauxite mining, but also to further use in agriculture after the reclamation and restoration of exhausted deposits.

WINDALCO implements a resource and development programme, designed to find the most efficient ways of land restoration, which will enable local farmers to use the land for agricultural purposes in the future.

Certificates

In 2002, WINDALCO adopted the International Environmental Standard, ISO 14001. In August 2000, it was accredited with the ISO 14001-1996 Environmental Management System (EMS) Standard.  WINDALCO was the first corporation in Jamaica to be accredited in accordance with this environmental standard.
