ZAPOROZHYE ALUMINIUM SMELTER

Zaporozhye Alumina and Aluminium Complex is one of the first Soviet aluminium production facilities and the only aluminium producer in the Ukraine.

It was commissioned in 1933 and reconstructed after the Second World War in 1949.

The complex mainly produces alumina and primary aluminium with the Zaporozhye Hydropower Plant generating electricity for the complex.

In 2007 the complex produced 113,000 tonnes of primary aluminium and 235,000 tonnes of alumina.

 Geography

Founded in 1770, Zaporozhye (known as Aleksandrovsk before 1921) is a Ukrainian town in the centre of the Zaporozhye region. With a population of 896,600 people, it serves as a port on the Dnieper River and is also a railway hub. Its main industries are ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, machinery and food. Dneprovsk Hydropower Plant is located in Zaporozhye.

Ukraine is a state in South-Eastern Europe. Bordering the Black and Azov Seas, it covers 603,700 square kilometres and has a population of 48.9 million people. The climate is temperate.

Technology

Zaporozhye Alumina and Aluminium Complex has electrolytic cells with self-baking anodes and horizontal Soderberg studs. The Bayer process is used to refine foreign bauxites and produce alumina.

Certificates

All divisions of the Zaporozhye Alumina and Aluminium Complex are certified in compliance with the ISO 9001 international quality standards.

Development and environment

  • Dry gas scrubbers were installed in 1995
  • In 1999 aluminium wire rod and foil production equipment was commissioned
  • The complex is a participant of the UN Development Programme – Global Environmental Facility (“Environmental Enhancement of the Dniepr”)
  • According to the technical re-equipment plan up to 2010 the complex will modernise its reduction and ore heat treatment technologies by installing dry gas scrubbers, and water recycling stations, etc.
