SILICON

Silicon Ltd. was established in 1998 when a powder metallurgy shop was formed as a separate division from the Irkutsk aluminium smelter.

The facility is situated in Shelekhov and was originally commissioned in 1980.

Its main products are: silicon for the chemical industry and alloys. It is the only Russian producer of silicon.

The production volume in 2005 amounted to 32,000 tonnes.

 Geography

Shelekhov is a town in the Irkutsk region of the Russian Federation. There is a railway station called Goncharovo. The town’s population is 55,100 people. It has an aluminium smelter, and cable and timber plants.
The territory of the Irkutsk region is 767,900 square kilometres. Its population is 2,734,000 people, Irkutsk being the regional centre. The region is part of the Siberian Federal District, which is located in the south-east of the Central Siberian Plateau.

Technology

The facility uses thermal treatment to produce silicon in three-phase ore thermal furnaces. Quartzite from Cheremshansk quartzite mine (part of Silicon Ltd.) is used in raw material for production of silicon.

Prospected quartzite resources at Cheremshansk quartzite mine total more than 45 mln tonnes and annual production output is expected to exceed more than 230,000 tonnes.
