SILICON
Silicon Ltd. was
established in 1998 when a powder metallurgy shop was formed as a separate
division from the Irkutsk aluminium smelter.
The facility is situated in Shelekhov and was originally commissioned in 1980.
Its main products are: silicon for the chemical industry and alloys. It is the
only Russian producer of silicon.
The production volume in 2005 amounted to 32,000 tonnes.

Shelekhov is a town in the Irkutsk
region of the Russian Federation. There is a railway station called Goncharovo.
The town’s population is 55,100 people. It has an aluminium smelter, and cable
and timber plants.
The territory of the Irkutsk region is 767,900 square kilometres. Its
population is 2,734,000 people, Irkutsk being the regional centre. The region
is part of the Siberian Federal District, which is located in the south-east of
the Central Siberian Plateau.

Technology
The facility uses thermal treatment to produce silicon in three-phase ore
thermal furnaces. Quartzite from Cheremshansk quartzite mine (part of Silicon
Ltd.) is used in raw material for production of silicon.
Prospected quartzite resources at Cheremshansk quartzite mine total more than 45
mln tonnes and annual production output is expected to exceed more than 230,000
tonnes.
Certificates
Silicon Ltd. quality management system is certified in compliance with the ISO
9001 international standard.
